The taxes paid to the British crown were not being spent on American interests. The US has a pervasive tax system, yes, but those taxes make it back to public in many, many ways that are benificial to the people. Or they used to. Now they're mostly wasted on Iraq.

There are far less influential governments than them who are still paying debts from corruption. It kind of goes with the territory; even the most noble governments still make significant mistakes that need repayment.

(I guess the short form of this post would've been simply "India says hi!", and that forgets Africa--I'm not trying to call out Great Britain in particular, just any country that ever has any global influence winds up with plenty of bad along with plenty of good, and they more than almost anyone have a huge amount of historical global influence).
