Kanye West has talent - as a PRODUCER of music, not necessarily as a performing artist. And his producing talent isn't super original - he just has a good ear for classic funk beats from the late 60's and 70's, rehashes and resamples them to a new audience. And sadly, that new audience thinks its "original". And of course, his success has gone to his head to the point where he's a megalomaniac now. :|

I mean, it's a crying shame that kids have no idea who Curtis Mayfield is but when they hear "Move On Up", they think it's a slower version of "Kiss the Sky". :no:

There was a whole lotta "re" in that post mokk. So in other words....his "talent", and his acceptance/popularity from, and with the masses comes from his ability to take someone else's work/art and add some shitty "scratching", and back beats that are generated by a computer, as opposed to using musicians like the musicians whose talent created the music in the first place? Makes perfect sense to me bro.

I watch nothing on TBS now for that reason. If it's not the censoring, it's the commercials every five minutes.

Usenet is still your friend for uncensored/uncommercialed (is that a word?) T.V., and movies.

Pretty much - I give him credit as he can identify what samples to use and how to use them to make them sound fresh and sometimes even better. But he's not a true musician (he plays instruments, but not with any authority) and his rap skills can be "catchy" but hardly noteworthy.

Rap has really lost its true "identity" as an aggressive vocal artform of using witty wordplay and a conscious serious message combined with hard soulful beats. The rap nowadays that is considered popular is all about catchy rhymes, overused samples and artificial effects - there are only so many ways to sample the Isley Brothers "Between The Sheets" before enough is enough.

I forget who said it, but to sum it up authentic rap is about "struggle" - mainstream rap is about "riches". :afro:

 

I still don't know what the skinny is sweets. The issues are on the other end (Florida).
